a. Litter is defined as trash or garbage that is not disposed of properly and that is left laying where it doesn’t belong. An example of litter is garbage lying on public streets, roads, rivers, lakes, yards, and parking lots.
2. Litter is:
a. Ugly
b. Expensive – every year VDOT spends 1.5 Million dollars to clean highways.
c. Illegal
d. Hurts people– Cause road accidents, cut on bottle on playground
e. Kills and Injures Animals - Many small animals crawl into bottles or jars and get stuck and slowly starve to death. Animals get caught in plastic six-pack rings, plastic bags, fishing lines, and a multitude of throwaways.
f. Litter is a problem that can be controlled – How? Education!
3. Tell 3 People the 4 approaches to Community Change:
a. Education – In School and Communities
b. Technologies – Equipment to measure and manage waste
c. Ordinances – Laws that impacts solid waste and litter management
d. Enforcement – Consistent, effective law and ordinance enforcement
4. Litter & Illegal Dumping Enforcement Month
a. April Is Litter and Illegal Dumping Enforcement Month April 1st-30th
b. Explain that dumping trash, Companion Animals on public roadways is a crime with a punishable fine.
c. Residents can also call the Police non-emergency number, 703-792-6500, to report trucks with unsecured or uncovered loads, instances of illegal dumping of trash, or other violations of the litter laws.
